Mobile connections cross 4,00,00,000 (4 crore) subscribers in Gujarat

From a little over 4,000 in 1997 to over four crore in 2010. That is how Gujarat has progressed in number of mobile connections in the past 13 years. Now, the state boasts of 4,01,58,662 mobile connections.
The October 2010 subscription data report of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), which was released last week, says the mobile subscription in Gujarat stands at 4,01,58,662.
These connections have been provided by 10 operators.
Considering that Gujarat's estimated population is about six crore, the current number of cellularconnections gives one the impression that about 66.6% of people (or 6.66 out of every 10 people) have mobile connections.
But industry sources say there are many who possess more than one connection, so it is not necessarily true that 66.6% of people hold mobile connections.
In May 1997, there were only 4,100 mobile connections in Gujarat. At that time there were only two operators and the incoming charge was Rs8 per minute. It took 11 years for the number of mobile connections to reach one crore in May 2007.
However, the number of subscriptions increased remarkably in short spans thereafter.
Then it took another 18 months for that figure to double. And by the end of January 2010, that is, in only about 14 months, Gujarat recorded a total of three crore mobile phone connections. And soon, in next nine months, one crore connections were added and the number of connections now is over four crore.
Five years back, Gujarat was on the top in the number of connections among 22 circles in India but today it stands seventh.
By end of October 2010, Tamil Nadu had 6.36 crore mobile connections followed by Uttar Pradesh (East) with 5.46 crore, Andhra Pradesh (5.40 crore), Maharashtra & Goa excluding Mumbai (5.23 crore), Bihar (4.63 crore) and Karnataka (4.38 crore). The number of mobile connections in India is now 70.66 crore,of which Gujarat contributes 5.67%.
In last one year, five new telecom companies - Videocon, Uninor, Aircel, Etisalat (GSM service) and Shyam Sistema (CDMA service) - have launched their services in Gujarat. Besides, two existing CDMA players _ Tata and Reliance _ have also started their GSM operations in the state.
Of the total four crore mobile connections, the new players have a share of around 50 lakh connections. Industry sources say since there is a rise in multi-SIM users in Gujarat, there is a huge potential for mobile penetration in rural areas.
"It is pure SIM card penetration in which more than one SIM card is sold to a person. At present, in rural areas of Gujarat the actual mobile penetration is less than 40% so there is a huge potential there," said COO ofBharti Airtel (Gujarat Circle) Shivan Bhargava.
Of the total mobile subscription of 4,01,58,662 in Gujarat, about 3.80 crore are believed to be prepaid connections. "Around 95% of the total mobile connections are prepaid. With more telecom players entering the market, the prepaid connection sales have gone up. Simultaneously, there is also a rise in multi-SIM holders in which people want to try out the cheapest tariff services," said senior vice president (operations) Idea Cellular, Arul Bright.
He said in September and October which are months of festive season, many numbers were added and that pushed the mobile subscriptions to over four crore.

Gujarat FDCA imparted training to street vendors

Now you can savour your favourite dishes at Law Garden and Manek Chowk in a more hygienic fashion. Staff at the food stalls there are now donning gloves and head gear and disposing of the left-overs in a hygienic manner.
State food and drug control administration (FDCA) officials now visit Law Garden every Thursday to check the result of the training programme they imparted to street vendors last week and, interestingly, they have found that the course has been fruitful.
If you can get good results by training them, why impose a penalty on the vendors, asks the commissioner of state food and drug control administration (FDCA), HG Koshia, while sharing his experience of training the food sellers.
Koshia said, "They were not 'raids' by the FDCA. We had organised a training programme on hygiene and sanitation for the vendors of Law Garden and Manek Chowk. We wanted to see the outcome so we visited the places. I found that most of the vendors and their waiters were using gloves and head gear while serving food and they were also clearing the left-over food in the manner in which they were trained."
According to the FDCA commissioner, the programme was an initiative to educate the vendors in hygiene and sanitation. "We were expecting about 60 vendors from both the places but the turn-out was more than 70. I personally talked to some foreigners who were eating at these food joints during our survey on Thursday. They were happy to learn about the state government's concern for hygiene and sanitation," said Koshia.
He added, "Now, looking at the positive response of the vendors, we will soon organise another similar training schedule. We are planning to invite hotel management experts who can train these vendors in food preparation and cooking in a hygienic way. Ultimately we have to ensure better quality and healthy food for the people."

Gujarat government is establishing a telemedicine network

In order to provide quality healthcare facilities to rural and remote areas of the state, Gujarat government is establishing a telemedicine network that connects 24 primary health centres (PHC) to community health centres (CHC) and district hospitals.

Telemedicine is an application of clinical medicine where medical information is transferred through interactive audiovisual media for the purpose of consulting, and sometimes explaining remote medical procedures or examinations.

Cost-effective system
The new system, a cost-effective one, comes as a boon to people residing in remote areas of the state that often have dearth of medical experts. Through the telemedicine network specialists will be able to guide the doctors at the health centres during emergency and critical care situations. This will reduce the travel time for health professionals, lessen the inconvenience to patients who don’t need to travel to towns for treatment.

The project aims to design, develop and implement cost-effective rural telemedicine infrastructure consisting of web-based technology in rural areas. The PHCs covered under the project will have a tele-consultation room and IT-compatible medical equipment besides computers and video conferencing facilities. PHCs will conduct all the basic tests like temperature, pulse, BP measurement, ECG and blood glucose examination for the teleconsultation of the patient.

The level-1 telemedicine consultation centres incorporating PHCs, CHCs and district hospitals can send the reports to a tertiary hospital and get an expert opinion. The tertiary hospitals, part of the level-2 network, will be able to consult with each other or refer a case as and when needed. Personnel at the hospitals and health centres will be trained in operating telemedicine equipment and computer software.

“Gujarat government is actively pursuing setting up of telemedicine centres in the state. No other state can boast of such a well-planned network,” claims a source. When contacted State Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said: “The state health department is setting up the telemedicine centres in association with the science and technology department. The pilot project is in its advanced stage. We aim at optimising  the use of this technology in order to provide quality healthcare to people located in the remotest areas of Gujarat.”

Gujarat based companies have installed ‘Light Pipe - The Miracle Daylight System’

Concerns over environment is prompting business houses and even the state government to harness power of the sun. Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Core House and the forest & environment department have installed an innovative system that uses sunlight to illuminate enclosed office spaces.

The technology, called ‘Light Pipe - The Miracle Daylight System’, has helped them reduce their electricity consumption and maintain ambient temperature.

“The system illuminates our offices from the moment the sun rises to late in the evening. By installing it, we have been able to cut down our power bill,” Torrent Pharma’s assistant general manager, Illesh Parikh, told Mirror.

Light tubes, like the one above, are installed on buildings’ rooftops where they can get exposure to sunlightCaptured light passes through reflective tubing. At the tubing’s end, there’s a diffuser that distributes light in an enclosed area

The company has set up six ‘light pipes’ in its finished goods stores and offices over the past four to five months. It now plans to install the system in its packaging and storage department.

Parikh said that the technology was a tad expensive, but it would prove to be very beneficial in the long term. “The current (power) traffic is Rs 5.5 per unit. If, in a year, one uses it (the system) 10 hours a day, then one can break even after seven years,” he said.

The ‘Miracle Daylight System’ captures sunlight from rooftops and “pipes it down” through reflective tubing to enclosed spaces such as basements. A diffuser at the end of tubing evenly distributes light in all directions. (See box to know the specifics.)

Respite from heat

While it uses sun’s rays to illuminate a place, it does not pass on sun’s heat. What is more remarkable about the technology is that it provides illumination even on cloudy days. S K Nanda, the principal secretary of environment department that has set up light pipes, told Mirror that they were proving to be quite effective in decreasing
dependence on electricity.

‘use of natural light vital for green dream’
“Using natural light for illumination of closed spaces is a good way to save money. There’s an installation cost involved, but there is no operational cost,” he said. “Such technology is a step towards environment conservation.”

It’s not just major businesses houses and government departments that are harnessing the power of the sun. Humed Jambughoda, a Dahod-based businessman, has fixed a light pipe in his warehouse. “The results are great. I hope such systems help us create a green Gujarat,” he said.
Light pipes may be used at Vibrant venue
The company that sells light pipes, Motivation, said that they might be used at the venue of Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit next year.

“They provide light even at low sun angles and do no produce any noise. Moreover, they do not transmit sun’s heat, in the process decreasing the need for air conditioners,” the company’s director, Sunil Shah, said.

The system, whose cost ranges from Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000, can be set up in buildings, industrial units and even residential spaces.

Catching the light

»   ‘Light Pipe - Miracle Daylight System’ captures sunlight from rooftops and “pipes it down” through reflective tubing to enclosed spaces. A diffuser at the end of tubing evenly distributes light in all directions.

»   While it uses sun’s rays to illuminate a place, it does not pass on sun’s heat. What is more remarkable about the technology is that it provides illumination even at low sun angles and on cloudy days.

»   The Miracle Daylight System has a ultraviolet (UV) absorbing polycarbonate dome and bottom diffuser, which absorb 99 per cent of UV radiation. Its life expectancy is 15 to 20 years.

»   Light pipes — which can be used to illuminate commercial, residential & industrial places that don’t have adequate windows — help reduce dependence on electricity. They can be very beneficial during power failures.

Gujarat to have 2 new oil spill response cells

The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) in north-west India is setting up two emergency response centres for handling oil spills.
"The two centres will be capable of handling oil spill contingencies along the entire coast of the state," said GMB officials, quoted by a local news provider.
GMB estimates that 6,800 ships call at Gujarat each year and that 150 million metric tonnes (mt) of oil and oil product imports pass through its ports.
It fears the threat of oil spills along the coast is growing.
One of the emergency response centres will be set up in Gulf of Kutch and the other in the  Gulf of Khambhat in the south of the state.
"The oil spill response centres will help in preventing any unrestorable ecological damage along the Gujarat coast in the eventuality of an accident," said officials.
Gujarat state includes the port of Mundra, one of India's largest bunkering centres.

Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) Inks PPA with 54 solar companies for 537 MW

Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL), a state-run power generation, distribution and transmission company, has recently inked Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with as many as 54 solar power generation companies for 537 Mw. Earlier, the apex electricity company had signed PPAs for 396.5 Mw with over two dozen firms.
The companies which entered into purchase agreements with GUVNL also include Tata Power, Monnet Ispat Solar Energy, GMR Gujarat Solar, Alex Astral, Ganges Entertainment Pvt Ltd and Ujjwala Energy Pvt Ltd. All these companies have signed PPAs for 25 Mw each, while Hira Co India Pvt Ltd and Kiran Energy Pvt Ltd for 20 Mw each.

Apart from this, state PSUs such as Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC), Gujarat Industries Power Company Ltd (GIPCL) and Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd (GPCL) have signed agreements for 5 Mw each. With this, Gujarat’s solar purchase commitment stands at 933.5 Mw.
The latest agreements have come in the wake of Gujarat government allotting addition 565 Mw solar power generation capacity to various solar power project developers in the second round of allotment. In the first round, the Gujarat government had allocated 716 Mw of capacity to 34 national and international companies.
Gujarat government has set the ambitious target of installing 1,000 Mw solar power capacity by the end of 2012 and 3,000 Mw in the next five years.
It may be mentioned here that Gujarat government is focusing aggressively on green energy. In order to promote power generation from solar power plants, Gujarat came up with solar power policy in 2009. Clinton Foundation, NTPC, Adani Group are some of the leading solar power project developers who have expressed the intention of setting up solar projects in the state. As many as 74 solar power project developers are either in the process of setting up their power projects or have committed to do so in Gujarat.
As part of the government policy, Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Authority (GERC) fixed a tariff of Rs 15/unit for power to be purchased from solar photovoltaic generators and Rs 11/unit for solar thermal power for the first 12 years.

Surat Municipal Corporation of Gujarat to ink MoU with Japan

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is all set to sign a MoU with Japan on drafting a master plan for developing safe and eco-friendly waste treatment modules.
Japan had evinced keen interest in Surat Municipal Corporation's eco drive and for developing the plan. The master plan will be provided to SMC for free.
Japan had agreed to prepare the master-plan after conducting a thorough study of the work done by the civic body in areas of solid and liquid waste management.
A team of civic engineers had presented the civic work module during a conference held in the city of Kitakyushu in Japan on December 22. Impressed with SMC's activities, the East-Asian country offered to provide help in enhancing waste management.
The help will involve providing ideas related to possible waste recycling, its reuse and reproduction.
"They will provide us the technology and technical know-how required to dispose waste, with least harm to the atmosphere.
We are not required to pay for the consultancy services; but will have to incur cost only for technology installation. We are working adequately in liquid waste, but something fruitful is required for solid waste management," said, Jatin Shah, SMC city engineer.
Shah added that the civic body has already installed bio-gas based power plants at five sewage treatment plants in Surat. The electricity produced by the bio-gas based turbines run all the treatment plants and this saves electricity worth Rs12.36 crore annually.
Apart from drafting the master-plan, Japan will also present a live demo of its plan before the civic engineers. A team of Japanese experts will visit Surat to guide civic officials and for passing on technical knowledge.
Besides human waste, industrial waste is also a big challenge for SMC. Majority of the industrial waste results from textile sectors such as yarn manufacturing, cloth manufacturing and textile processing.
The civic body collects an annual waste of more than 150 metric tons from these three units. Water pollution is another major issue related with the sector.

Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) is flooded with enquiries from US companies

If one goes by the number of enquiries that Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) is getting everyday, pharmaceutical sector is likely to shine in this year's Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors' Summit (VGGIS). Two US based companies, Amneal Pharmaceuticals and Apicore LLC have sent proposals to the Gujarat FDCA to set up units in the state. FDCA is hoping that investments this year could nearly be around four times that of 2009 VGGIS which had seen investments worth Rs 2,700 crore.

H G Koshia, commissioner, FDCA said "We are expecting investments worth Rs 10,000 crore in the sector this year" He confirmed that Amneal and Apicore have evinced interest in setting up units here. "Amneal has sent a proposal to set up a formulations unit and a research and development center here, while Apicore plans to set up an active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) unit in the state", Koshia said adding that Amneal is one among the ten largest generic companies in the US. Apicore is a limited liability company incorporated in New Jersey, US that is a developer and manufacturer of specialty Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and cGMP advanced intermediates. Amneal, on the other hand is a manufacturer of generic pharmaceuticals that works on the entire product lifecycle-from the early stages of R&D and API development through FDA approval.
Both the companies already have presence in India. Koshia said "Roughly around Rs 50 crore investment can be expected from these two US based companies, who would require small land parcels of around 10,000-20,000 square yards. The memorandums of understanding can be signed during the VGGIS."
Among the other proposals the FDCA is receiving, there is a mix of both domestic companies and export oriented units (EOU) in special economic zones (SEZ). "We have received 70 proposals in all so far, and it includes a mix of both domestic companies and EOUs. Most proposals are for formualtions and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) manufacturing units, besides research and development (R&D) outfits", Koshia said.
In 2009, the Gujarat government had signed 26 MoUs with pharma companies for investments worth Rs 2,700 crore. Of the 26, around eight projects have taken off, with plants that are already operational, and the others are in various stages of implementation, Koshia informed.
Gujarat currently enjoys a 42 per cent share in India's pharmaceutical production, while its share in the medical devices segment is around 50 cent. The state has over 2,300 pharma manufacturing units, and 115 medical devices manufacturing units.
Koshia clarified that the 70 proposals that it has on its table are all pharma manufacturing units, adding that this year there is a slight dip in the applications for clinical research organisations (CRO).
As for the medical devices sector, the state government is working closely with the Centre to develop a medical devices cluster over 100 acres in the area that has shot to fame after the Tata Nano project parked in. The state government has committed around Rs 30 crore investment in the project that can house 30-40 small and medium sized companies making syringes, intra-venous (IV) packs, cardiac stents among other devices.
National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research (NIPER) is going to co-execute the project. Gujarat has around 150 medical device manufacturing units, of which around 30 odd have the European Union CE Certification.

Gujarat first in India to have 500 MW power production through solar energy solar Park at Charanka village in Santalpur taluka of Patan district

Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate Solar Park at Charanka village in Santalpur taluka of Patan district on December 30. This is considered as Gujarat’s huge step to tackle the issue of climate change.
The project will produce 500-MW of power with the use of renewable energy source. Use of solar energy will decrease the CO2 emission by 8 lakh million ton and save the bio-fuels like coal and gas. This is a first-ever project in entire Asia and with 500-MW of power production through solar energy, Gujarat will be the first state in the country to take such measure.
The solar park is likely to get solar energy for 330 days in a year amounting 5.5 to 6.0 KW per Sq.km solar radiation every day. Gujarat government has agreed upon buying 933-MW of power under its new solar power policy, which is a remarkable move in the solar power sector of India.
The solar park at Charanka village will be constructed on the land of 2000-hectare for the phase-1. Out of which 1000-hectare is a waste land. Land acquisition process is still in progress. Works for the transmission of the power produced on the site have been started by Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Ltd (GETCO).
All the resources needed to produce electricity will be provided to the producer on the site ensuring a saving of time and money both for government and the energy-producers. In the phase-1, land will be acquired mainly by GPCL. Plots will be separated out and will be given to energy-developers for the lease of 30 years. Facilities like water, electricity, roads, rain water drainage, power transmission facility and others will be provided to power producers. Government is done with the onsite studies like topography survey, geotechnical survey and others.
State government will also establish projects like solar plant machinery manufacturing, research and development and others. Government will also work for training and research in order to provide technical manpower.
The project will also develop the remote villages like Charanka. Besides, the state will see an investment of around 7500-crore. The park will also have a need for assembling, civil works, electrical wiring, solar panel cleaning and others and thus will give employment to large number of local people.
It is worth noting that Gujarat is taking initiative in the use of wind energy, solar energy, hydro power and tidal energy. Gujarat has brought out its solar power policy in 2009 and it got unprecedented response. Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit held in 2009 saw MOUs with 57 companies for the production of 9606 MW. The new solar policy will likely to fetch an investment of Rs.65,000-crore in coming three to four years. Use of solar and other renewable energy will ensure low carbon emission, clean environment and an employment for around 40,000 people.

Hyundai interested in setting up plant in Gujarat

India's second largest carmaker Hyundai Motors has evinced interest in setting up a manufacturing facility in Gujarat, and its officials have visited a site at Dholera near here, which was suggested by the state officials.

"A delegation from Hyundai Motors have visited a site in Dohlera 10 days ago as suggested by our department for their new plant," a top industry department official said on the condition of anonymity.

"After the site visit they have shown interest in setting up the plant here, but nothing is final yet," officials said.

The company officials who had visited Dholera will now be submitting its recommendations to the company board. Its board will be taking a final decision in this regard, he said.

They might also be exploring options in other states for setting up a manufacturing plant, he further said.

Dholera, is a special investiment region (SIR) in the state spread across 80,000 hectares of land and falls near the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridore (DMIC). It is located just 90 kms from the city where the state government has decided to set up second international airport of the state also.

Hyundai Motors had yesterday announced that it will invest Rs 400 crore over the next three years to set up a diesel engine manufacturing plant in India with an installed capacity of 1.5 lakh units per annum. The plant is expected to go on stream by 2013-14.

Presently, the company imports its diesel engines from Korea for its models such as 'i20' and 'Verna'. With this proposed plant it will not have to import engines.

Hyundai Motors already has two manufacturing plants in India located at Sriperumbdur in state of Tamil Nadu, where it is looking to expand its production capacity by next year.

The company also has plans to roll out three new models in 2011. It had sold 5.6 lakh units in 2009 and is targetting to sell 6.3 lakh units in 2011.

Recently, Car maker Ford had consulted the Gujarat officials to set up its second manufacturing facility in India, as it gears up to introduce eight new products by 2015.

Gujarat government aims to make the state as a favourable destination for the car makers, after Tata's relocated its Nano plant from Singur in Kolkata to Sanand near here in 2008.
