Gujarat can become India's petro-hub: ONGC

GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat could become the hub of India's petroleum sector once the upcoming Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Region
Petroleum sector

(PCPIR) project is completed, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) chairman Radheshyam Sharma told Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.

The Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) and ONGC are jointly implementing the project.

According to state officials, Sharma discussed with Modi the possibilities of expanding the partnership to an underground coal gasification (UCG) project, based on Russian-German technology.

In response, Modi outlined the opportunities in coal bed methane (CBM) development and research in North Gujarat, and possibilities in non-conventional energy, particularly wind and solar hybrid energy, solar energy, wind power energy and geo-thermal energy.

The ONGC chief accepted the suggestions made by Modi on corporate social responsibility in the petroleum and energy sectors. The chief minister said there was a need to create a special cell to address the issues and grievances of farmers when land is required for setting up projects.

Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority will undertake a project with ONGC to tackle the issues of oil and gas leak, pollution and crisis management. Sharma said the Mangrove Project would be implemented very soon at Bay of Cambay to protect coastal environment.

Balaji Wafers a name to reckon with in Gujarat snacks market

Chataka Pataka Tangy Tomato Snacks happens to be all over Gujarat — present in almost every paan shop and organised retail outlet, but with no jumbo billboards screaming its delights. With simple ideas that may seem outlandish in this age of brazen marketing, Chataka creator Balaji Wafers Pvt Ltd has managed to fend off bigger players like Pepsico and Haldiram’s in the Rs 600-crore Gujarat market for over two decades since launch.

“Balaji survives solely on word-of-mouth publicity,” Mahesh Manjawala, executive director, Triton Communications, adding that the group has few advertisements to its name. That publicity, say industry watchers and rivals, comes from the Gujarat-based snacks maker’s ability to localise flavours. “Balaji understands the palate of the consumer well,” says Mr Manjawala.

Indeed, Balaji products like Chataka Pataka, Ratlami Sev and Sing Bhujiya, among others, suit the tastes of a specific market. The company offers masala wafers to cater to the Gujarati palate, chaat masala for the Maharashtra market and a range of spicy snacks for Rajasthan.

Here, it scores over Haldiram’s, which too has flavours to cater to the North Indian palate, by a better understanding of the Gujarati consumer. Balaji’s pampers the Gujarati’s sweet tooth by keeping its khatta-meetha less spicy.

“Balaji’s product mix is just right,” says Mr Manjawala.

Those products get an extensive reach in Gujarat, courtesy 10 sole distributors and a 400-dealer network, complemented by a fleet of 150 trucks and 3,500 minivans.

According to industry watchers, tremendous dealer support is one of Balaji’s key strengths.

Balaji keeps its dealers happy and is flexible in dealings, says Shashin Shah, an Ahmedabad-based dealer. “Our salespeople always get easy money,” he says, adding that the group encourages dealers to arrange their own fleet, for which they are compensated. Not to forget a certain factor called pricing. Balaji’s namkeen and wafer packets come for as less as Rs 1 and Rs 5, respectively.

Balaji MD Chandu Virani says volumes help him offer such prices. The pricing plan drove PepsiCo’s Kurkure down the same path, he says, adding that his rivals had to offer similar schemes to retain consumers. This strategy of marrying price, flavour and distribution is estimated to have catapulted the group to a 90% share of the state’s wafers market and 70% of the namkeen market. After beating local brands like Samrat & Real, Balaji has since spread to Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, eyeing a bigger bite of the Rs 3,000-crore branded snacks market.

Rivals are understandably frustrated with Balaji’s success. But some months ago, Lays and Haldiram’s got a godsend opportunity to learn management practices from the group. Representatives from the two companies came calling at Balaji’s premises, taking in operations at the plants and potato fields where the company sources its raw materials. Lay’s went back a lot wiser. “We are impressed by the simplicity and efficiency of Balaji’s operations,” said a PepsiCo spokesman while Haldiram’s could not be reached for its comment.

PepsiCo has since been trying to convince Mr Virani for a sellout.

The group is against the idea, focusing instead on an expansion overdrive. Plans are afoot to expand the snacks range and cater to the global markets. Balaji is also embracing innovations; an automatic food-tech potato processing machinery was installed recently at one of its plants.

Like most family-run businesses, Balaji too had humble beginnings —its delivery van sputtered to life on a loan of Rs 25,000 from a 1,000-metre plot in 1989-90.

Before that, Chandu Virani, born in a farmer’s family, moved to Rajkot from Dhundhoraji village in Jamnagar after acute drought in the mid-1970s snatched all means of livelihood. “While our attempts to do farm equipment business flopped miserably, robbing our family of savings, I also had to shelve plans to run a dairy retail outlet,” he recollects.

At 17, Mr Virani was meeting ends by working as a canteen boy & doorkeeper at Rajkot’s Astron Cinema for Rs 90 a month. Help came in the form of Mr Virani’s then employer, Govind Khunt, who outsourced the canteen business to him and his brother. From that ramshackle canteen, Balaji has grown to a group that boasts of three plants—two in Rajkot and one in Valsad—that churn out 30 lakh packets per day and a Rs 300-crore turnover in 2008-09. Mr Virani still refers to his former employer as “seth”, much to the latter’s embarrassment, who believes “Chandu has grown in stature and is now a seth himself”. Those days helped Mr Virani find a name for the grandiose business that was shaping up in his mind.

“In 1983-84, a small Hanuman temple was set up in the cinema hall’s canteen. That inspired me to name the then homemade potato wafers Balaji,” he says. Today, Balaji’s aura of invincibility, which allows it to even host rival representatives, is a hot topic in B-schools, discussed maybe over its own snacks.

Bharat Forge prefers Gujarat over Bengal

Bharat Forge Ltd (BFL) has finally decided to shift its power equipment project to Gujarat, moving out from West Bengal, where it was
facing hurdle in land acquisition, which was delaying the project.

When Gujarat CM Narendra Modi flies with Baba Kalyani, CMD, Bharat Forge Ltd (BFL), to Mundra Port and SEZ in Kutch district on Friday, one of India’s oldest automotive component companies would have initiated a metamorphosis for itself.

Modi, incidentally, is taking an uncharacteristic break from his annual ‘chintan shivir ’ in the Kutch desert to lay the foundation for the Rs 2,400 crore power equipment manufacturing facility by BFL and its French partner Alstom, a global leader in the sector. The unit will come up on 120 acres in the 6,700-acre SEZ.

Ironically, Modi’s counterpart in West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, was almost ready to provide BFL land for its captive steel plant at Panagarh. But the process has now been delayed because land acquisition (in Burdwan district) has hit administrative hurdles. Modi took only two months in providing land and has already earmarked another 700 acres for other BFL projects.

With Alstom, BFL will introduce the most technologically advanced turbines and generators to support India’s move towards environmentally-friendly power generation. With a manufacturing capacity of 5,000 MW per annum, the venture will meet a quarter of the country’s foreseeable power equipment needs by 2012-13 .

The Rs 5,000-crore metalforming company is going through unprecedented change. From being India’s largest manufacturer and exporter of automotive component, it is now ambitiously moving into the fast moving capital goods business and gearing to become a predominantly non-automotive company in the next 24 months.

By 2014-15, more than 75 per cent of BFL’s revenues will come from non-automotive businesses, especially through initiatives in power, oil and gas, marine transport, railways and aerospace sectors.

“A doubledigit growth for the Indian economy requires a major expansion of the capital goods sector to effectively feed an industrial upsurge. We aim at contributing to the growth of the capital goods sector in India,” says Baba Kalyani, chairman, BFL. It has garnered its most expansive plans in power sector.

In another large venture in Gujarat (with French firm Areva), BFL is graduating to manufacture nuclear power plant components and equipment. A 14,000 tonne open-die press facility, the largest in this part of the world, will be established by 2012 representing a national capability, rolling out 550 tonne forging. A nuclear reactor needs 10-12 of such mammoth forging.

BFL, along with NTPC, is preparing to manufacture, large castings, high pressure piping, pumps and valves.

CMD Baba Kalyani is entering into power equipment biz and changing location due to land acquisition problem.

Nano draws biotech giant Alexandria to Gujarat

Alexandria Real Estate, the $5.2 billion US-based company which provides solutions to life science industry, has decided to set up a sprawling biotech research and development (R&D) and incubation facility next to the Tata Motors’ Nano project in Sanand.

A senior official said, "Alexandria has applied for 25 acres of land and intends to spend up to Rs 500 crore for the project."

"The company’s presence will attract large number of investors in the biotech and health sector to Gujarat, especially in the vicinity of Nano. With Alexandria starting to implement its project, it is possible to develop a complete biotech park in the area," said a senior state government official.

Another proposal from Biocon, a fully integrated healthcare company that delivers innovative biopharmaceutical solutions, is pending clearance from the government. More, an Indian company has tied up with France’s Biolice in order to produce cent per cent degradable bioplastic and is looking for land near Ahmedabad.

Alexandria has global presence and puts up all the necessary equipment for R&D in biotech, including fermenters, centrifuges, autoclaves and costly NMR research equipment in its facility. Its clientele includes universities and independent not-for-profit institutions government agencies.

"After putting up the facility, it will go in for marketing its space. It will surely attract top biotech players," the official said, adding, "Alexandria has agreed to put up its facility on the condition of zero discharge of effluents This is particularly important, as the area near Nano does not have any effluent disposal pipelines."

RIL discovers oil in Cambay basin,Gujarat

Mukesh Ambani-run Reliance Industries today announced discovery of an oilfield 130 km from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, its second major find after the offshore MA field in the Krishna Godavari basin.

Reliance discovered oil in the fifth well it drilled on the 635-square kilometer CB-ONN-2003/1 block in the Cambay basin, a company statement said but did not give reserves the field may hold.
The block was awarded to Reliance in the fifth round of bidding under the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP). The company holds 100 per cent participating interest in the block.

Reliance had previously found crude oil reserves in the predominately gas-rich KG D-6 block off the east coast. The MA field, which came into production in September last year, is currently producing around 11,000 barrels per day.

The fifth well on the Cambay onland block, CB10A-A1 was drilled to a depth of 1451 meters. It encountered about 15 meter reservoir and the well flowed 500 barrels of oil per day during conventional testing.

"This discovery is expected to open future potential within the block," Reliance said, adding the discovery has been named 'Dhirubhai-43'.

"Commerciality of this discovery is being ascertained through more data gathering and analysis," the statement said. "3D Seismic data has been acquired over 80 per cent of the block area and 2D Seismic data has been acquired over the entire area."
"The discovery, named 'Dhirubhai-43' has been notified to Government and Directorate General of Hydrocarbons," the Reliance statement said.

The onland exploratory block CB-ONN-2003/1 covers an area of 635 sq km in two parts - Part A located in the west with an area of 570 square kilometres and Part B located to the east with an area of 65 square kilometres.

The discovery was made in Part A of the block, it said. A gross reservoir thickness of about 15 meters was encountered and the well flowed at a rate of 500 barrels of oil per day through a 6 mm bean with a flowing tubing head pressure of 360 psi on conventional testing.

"This discovery supplements Reliance's understanding of the petroleum system in this block in the Cambay basin. Based on interpretation of the acquired 3D seismic data, several prospects have been identified at different stratigraphic levels," the statement added.

IBM today announced that it has signed a decade long IT services agreement with Sardar Bhiladwala Pardi People's Co-operative Bank Ltd. (SBPPCB), one of the leading co-operative banks in Gujarat. The engagement, a complete operational expenditure (pay-as-you-go) model, will enable the bank to save up to 50 per cent in its capital expenditure on IT infrastructure.
As part of the agreement, IBM will provide managed continuity services encompassing server management, network and security management, back up and database management, a company release stated.
Established in 1929, the Sardar Bhiladwala Pardi People's Co-operative Bank's main objective is to help improve the lives of farmers, small traders and artisans. The 80-year-old co-operative bank was on its way to implementing a Core Banking solution and signed up with IBM to manage its IT infrastructure requirements remotely from IBM’s Global Management Centre in Bangalore. The end-to-end managed services provided by IBM will reduce upfront capital expenditure for the bank allowing it to spend in an operational expenditure model over a 10-year period.
The agreement with Sardar Bhiladwala Pardi People’s Co-operative Bank closely follows IBM's success with other co-operative banks across the country including Madhav Nagrik Sahakari Co-operative Bank in Rajasthan and with the Kurmanchal Nagar Sahkari Bank Ltd. in Nainital in Uttarakhand.
Talking about the contract with IBM, Ajay C Shah, chairman of Sardar Bhiladwala Pardi People's Co-operative Bank Ltd. said, "We have seen IBM's track record in addressing unique requirements of banks like us in India. We believe IBM's technology expertise and focus on delivering cost-efficient solutions will help us achieve our growth strategy and higher levels of customer satisfaction." Hemant M Desai, managing director of Sardar Bhiladwala Pardi People’s Co-operative Bank Ltd. said, "This model will set a good example for other co-operative banks for evaluating the core banking system with predictable and low expenditure as well as obtaining a high level of technology expertise."
Neeraj Sharma, director - integrated technology services, IBM India/South Asia said, "This is a strategic win since it is aligned to IBM's geo-expansion initiative and our focus on helping financial services clients.
With businesses across the country sharpening their focus on cost-efficiency in these challenging times, IBM has once again proved its partnership value for small and mid-sized customers.
We are excited about this opportunity with Sardar Bhiladwala Pardi People’s Co-operative Bank to offer managed services that will help them reduce their upfront IT expenditure.
The fact that the bank decided to enter into a 10-year long agreement further reiterates the trust clients, big and small, have in IBM’s capabilities.

Gujarat's luxury car market in Formula 1 mode

Gujarat has steadily grown from being a conservative market for premium cars with 2 per cent share to one that now has a 6.5 per cent share of domestic premium car sales. The state accounted for nearly 15 per cent of national sales of luxury cars during the car buying spree in Dussehra in September.

"The Gujarat market has been traditionally conservative compared to more flamboyant spending behaviour in the National Capital Region(NCR) and Mumbai. But, that is changing now. From a mere 2 per cent share of net luxury car sales in India around a year and a half back, the state now has a 6.5 per cent share," said Sanjay Thakker, chairman of Landmark Honda and also promoter of the dealership chain that has Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen AG outlets. He added that while the luxury car market is estimated to grow from around 8500 cars and sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in 2009 to around 10,000 vehicles in 2010, Gujarat's share should rise from a current 6.5 per cent to around 8 per cent.
Luxury car dealers here felt that there should be a 50 per cent rise in sales in 2010. Dealerships are in an expansion mode: Planet Petal, the exclusive dealers of Nissan Motors India in Ahmedabad, are all set to come up with two more outlets in Rajkot and Baroda within the next few months after they inaugurated their first outlet in the city a couple of weeks back. Thakker's Automark Motors, dealers of Mercedes in Ahmedabad, are starting a new outlet in Surat in the next few weeks. Sukhbir Bagga, director of Group Planet Petal said that upbeat from the current trend, they are looking at sales of Nissan cars to touch 3000 units by the end of 2010. Nissan has been selling completely-built-units (CBUs), its sedan Teana priced above Rs 21 lakh and sports utility vehicle(SUV) X-Trail that is priced around Rs 25 lakh in India so far. It will launch yet another CBU model, Nissan's sports car, 370Z in January next year besides starting production on its global compact car Micra from May 2010.The Micra will be positioned in the B+ segment.
There was a spurt in general buying during Dussehra this year when the sales of sedans overall jumped from a 1000 cars per month in Gujarat to 1500 cars in September. Mercedes sold 60 units in Gujarat alone of its net all-India sales of 415 cars in September 2009. "Easy financing option is perhaps one of the reasons for the interest in luxury car buying in this relatively conservative market. While rates of interest have fallen, companies offer interest-free equal monthly installment (EMI) options periodically", Thakker said. Mercedes had offered on easy EMI offers on its E-class sedans before phasing it out and introducing its upgraded version.
Currently, Volkswagen has four dealerships in the state, at Ahmedabad, Baroda, Rajkot and Surat, Mercedes has one in Ahmedabad while another is coming up in Surat, BMW,Audi and Nissan have one showroom each in Ahmedabad.
During April to October this year 2603 units of luxury cars were sold across the country as against 2218 units a year back, up 17 per cent.

Gujarat Based Essar Oil is set to emerge as India’s third largest oil refining company

Ruias-owned Essar Oil is set to emerge as India’s third largest oil refining company and one of the most complex refineries worldwide after it completes expansion of its Vadinar unit,Gujarat, according to an analyst report.

Essar is raising the Vadinar refinery capacity to 16 million tonnes from 10.5 million tonnes by December 2010 and further to 34 million tonnes in Phase-II expansion to be completed by December 2011, making it the country’s third largest refining company after Reliance Industries and Indian Oil Corp (IOC).

The report, issued yesterday by local brokerage HDFC Securities, said the expansions would help the firm earn about $3 more on processing of every barrel of crude oil.

“While refinery expansions will result in $3 per barrel premium over Singapore complex GRM (gross refining margin or earnings on processing of per barrel of crude), strategic focus on product evacuation will help maintain high capacity utilization,” it said.

After the expansion, Vadinar refinery in Gujarat would be able to process most of the dirty and difficult crudes that are sold at substantial discounts to premium crude like Bonny Light or Brent.

Its complexity index (a measure of the refinery’s capability of process difficult crude) will rise from existing 6.1 to 11.8 in 2011-12 and to 12.8 in 2012-13. “EBITDA margins will rise from 3.1 per cent in FY09 to above 10 per cent from FY13E,” the report said.

Again it can happen only in Gujarat: Charity movement !!!!!!!

Charity begins at home goes the adage. But this sexagenarian Amdavadi tweaked it a bit lying in a Civil Hospital bed five years ago. Moved by the plight of patients’ relatives from far-flung areas, he thought benevolence should begin from the health hub.

Meet 80-year-old Ghanshyam Patel, who delivers free food to the kin of patients from remote areas at Civil Hospital daily. He founded Gujarat Dardi Lok Kalyan Trust for the purpose in 1999 and started serving free lunch and dinner to 10 persons. Ten years on, the number of beneficiaries has swelled to 250 with support from different quarters.

Patel was admitted to Cancer Hospital in 1999. While undergoing treatment, he came across several poor patients from remote areas. He learnt that their relatives had to start for the hospital before dawn for attending to them because they could not afford to hire attendants. They hardly ate anything.

The poignant saga had a deep imprint in Patel’s mind and he decided to do something for the hapless kin of poor patients. Back home completely cured, he floated the idea of feeding them in front of other occupants of the complex he stayed in Naranpura, opposite to Ghatlodia police station. Each apartment owner agreed to donate a tiffin once a week.

After a couple of brainstorming sessions, Patel and his team founded Gujarat Dardi Lok Kalyan Trust. To start with, its members decided to deliver 10 tiffins each at lunch and dinner time.

Patel’s initiative became the talk of the town soon. Residents of nearby apartments and housing complexes also expressed their wish to chip in. Within three months, the number of beneficiaries surged to 25 in each half of the day. Patel had to appoint two cycle-wallahs for transporting the tiffins to the hospital.

A few months on, a young entrepreneur, son of one of the friends of Patel, made arrangements for 12-15 more tiffins. He also bought the trust a second-hand loading rickshaw for carrying the tiffins to Civil Hospital. A driver was appointed for steering it but the trust could not afford to give him salary. Patel sought help of his apartment’s residents once more. This time, its association decided to foot the bill of the driver.

The popularity of Patel’s free tiffin service soared with time and several more people joined his noble mission. With the number of contributors increasing, Patel started a monthly rotation system. Each contributor now delivers one tiffin a month. At present, free lunch and dinner reach 250 relatives of Civil Hospital patients daily in four loading rickshaws. Charity can tee-off from anywhere, ain’t it?
