Oilex strikes gas in Gujarat

Australia's Oilex Ltd on Monday said the company has made huge natural gas discovery in Gujarat that may hold over 1.5 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of recoverable reserves. Industry estimates put the total resource base or in-place reserves in the Cambay basin discoveries near Khambat, 160-km south of Ahmedabad, at 20-30 tcf, almost equivalent to the in-place reserves of Reliance Industries Ltd's eastern offshore Krishna Godavari (KG)-D6 fields.
However, KG-D6 fields have a higher recovery factor with almost 12 tcf of gas likely to be produced, while in Oilex's case, only 1.5 tcf can be produced as the reservior is "tight" with low permeability.
Oilex, which has already drilled wells on the Cambay Field, also announced "a significant upgrade to its reserves and contingent resources," based on evaluation by consultants NuTech Energy Alliance and Morning Star LLC.
The Cambay field may hold 853 billion cubic feet (bcf) of reserves justified for development plus another 720 bcf of contingent resources, totalling the recoverable reserves at 1.5 tcf. Oilex holds 45 per cent interest in the field, and Gujarat State Petroleum Corp holds the rest.

Bhavya Purohit and Harshee Adnani from Gujarat y win gold and bronze medals at the 28th sub-junior Taekwondo championship Read more: City girls win gold & bronze medal

Two teenage girls -- Bhavya Purohit and Harshee Adnani --from the city have brought laurels to Gujarat by winning gold and bronze medals at the 28th sub-junior Taekwondo championship recently organised at Guwahati by Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI).

This is the first time that Gujarat has won gold medal in Taekwondo at a national level event after the sport was introduced in Gujarat 18 years ago.

Bhavya, who won gold medal, was successful in beating contestants from Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in all the rounds. She (Bhavya) has been nominated for the most reputed sports award Sardar Patel Award' for the year 2009-10.

Likewise, Harshee won bronze medal by beating players from Chandigarh and Kerala. Now, she is eyeing to play in international events.

"Our girls have created history and proved their calibre in fighting against the states that dominate in Teakwondo sports like Assam, Manipur, Maharashtra etc," Taekwondo coach Pamir Shah said.

A village of teachers in Gujarat's Navsari district

Generally, a village comprises of people engaged in various types of activities, but a village in Navsari district is such, where everybody is associated to one profession, teaching.
There is no specific reason for villagers to get inclined towards teaching, but all just get attracted towards it and continue the legacy, left behind by their fore-fathers. On an average, there are two teachers at every house.
Kukeri village in Chikli taluka of Navsari district is such, which has the maximum number of teachers, given by any other area or region in the state. Villagers are mostly from Rajput community, coming from well-to-do families.
However, rather than going for business or any other money making activities, majority of the villagers have accepted teaching as their profession. Second community is that of Dodiya Patel, wherein, too majority of the people have opted for the same profession. The legacy is going past few decades, with the younger generation too making their careers in education.
Going on figures, there are 700 houses in the village, which has produced more than 250 teachers.
"On an average there are 2 teachers, in each house. Most of the schools located in Chikli taluka, have teachers from Kukeri. Interestingly, Kukeri also has the highest literacy ratio in the entire district," Raman Patel, a local villager and retired teacher.

Geoinformatics & Satellite Communication: New frontiers to be conquered by Gujarat

The Gujarat University has initiated an advanced PG diploma in Geoinformatics and Satellite Communication. The course is offered by the department of physics, electronics and space science, in collaboration with the Space Applications Centre (SAC) of ISRO and the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL).
The course involves a two-semester advanced PG diploma and many fields benefit from it, including town planning, development of navigation systems, automatic vehicle location systems, transportation planning and engineering. This advanced degree is also helpful in environmental modelling and analysis, telecommunications, agriculture and public health. Experienced people are also required for biodiversity management.
This course will impart training in various disciplines of geoinformatics such as remote sensing, geographic Information System (GIS), photogrammmetry and areas of tele-communication such as satellite communication, mobile communication, satellite navigation etc. The course has been designed to cater to the requirements of research, technology development and applications in the fields of geoinformatics and telecommunication.
The course consists of two semesters. In each semester, there are five theory papers, spanning about 36 lectures of one-hour duration each, and a major project. The first semester consists of papers like atmospheric physics, fundamentals of remote sensing, and basics and application of GIS. In this semester, the students will also be taught about microwave systems and satellite systems and orbits.
In the second semester, the students will be taught about satellite communication, satellite navigation, mobile communication, remote sensing applications and photogrammetry, besides having a project.
The projects, which are to be submitted one each in both semesters, could be carried out in institutions such as Space Applications Centre (SAC), Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Application and Geoinformatics (BISAG), Institute for Plasma research, GIS Industry, telecom Industry and any other universities. With an exposure to these projects, the students will get exposure, be able to work with good institutes, and interact with reputed professionals.
The students will be exposed to major research and operational institutes. All theory papers will carry 100 marks each, while the project will carry 500 marks. 30% marks will be awarded based on internal evaluation, through a written test and seminars and quizzes, while the remaining 70% will be on the basis of the examination conducted by the university.
Students who have done their post graduation in science or graduation in physics/electronics as the main subject, or those having done a BE or BTech from any university recognised by UGS or equivalent organisations, with a minimum of 50% marks, will be eligible to apply for this course. The total number of students will not exceed 15, and admissions will be merit-based.
The course is self-financed, and hence the fees will be Rs20,000 per semester, besides an examination fee of Rs750 and a caution deposit of Rs2,000. Students interested in applying for this course will be able to do so through the prospectus (inclusive of admission form) available at the department of physics, electronics and space sciences of the GU.
Students who complete this course will be able to find jobs in research in ISRO centres, the telecom industry, with the state government, remote sensing centres, remote sensing and GIS industry, universities and other R&D centres.
The course will also cater to those interested in satellite-based navigation systems such as Global Positioning System. Through this course, research in space and satellite-related courses will be enhanced and students will get exposure to the latest in the field, from the best in the field.
