Donation of Re 1 every day to fund the dialysis of needy kidney patients

Shail Shah & Palakh Jain, Re 1 Project

For the price of a cutting chai, you can save three lives. Soch will tell you how. The group has spearheaded the ‘Re 1’ project under which you can fund the dialysis of needy kidney patients by donating a rupee a day.

This simple but ingenious plan was conceived by Shail Shah, a 21-year-old engineer who belongs to a family of doctors, and Palakh Jain, a 26-year-old currently studying at IIM-A.

“The thought behind the project is: No one should die because he/she is poor. There are around 700 registered kidney patients in the city. Most patients have to undergo dialysis twice a week. The expenditure ranges from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 a month — a common man cannot spend so much money,” said Palakh.

“One rupee is a sum that the poorest of people can spare and feel the satisfaction of doing a good deed,” said Shail.

The duo tied up with Gujarat Kidney Foundation and a panel of six nephrologists who screen patients and oversee their treatment at Thackershi Trust Hospital and Sal Hospital, where dialysis is administered at a nominal rate. Talking about the change the movement has brought about in his life, Dr Jagdeep Shah, nephrologist and head of GKF, said, “I have been practising for 20 years, but had never delved into the financial status and social history of patients.
