Gujarat to have 2 new oil spill response cells

The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) in north-west India is setting up two emergency response centres for handling oil spills.
"The two centres will be capable of handling oil spill contingencies along the entire coast of the state," said GMB officials, quoted by a local news provider.
GMB estimates that 6,800 ships call at Gujarat each year and that 150 million metric tonnes (mt) of oil and oil product imports pass through its ports.
It fears the threat of oil spills along the coast is growing.
One of the emergency response centres will be set up in Gulf of Kutch and the other in the  Gulf of Khambhat in the south of the state.
"The oil spill response centres will help in preventing any unrestorable ecological damage along the Gujarat coast in the eventuality of an accident," said officials.
Gujarat state includes the port of Mundra, one of India's largest bunkering centres.
