Gujarat University to zoom into space with UGC research grants of Rs 6 crore

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Monday allotted a whopping Rs 6.4 crore to Gujarat University under the merger scheme. GU received this mammoth grant to develop various facilities, including sports, hostel, research and career counselling.
However, the grant received by the physics department is the most remarkable amongst these. The department received Rs65 lakhs to conduct further research into 'condense matter', making it their biggest allotment till date.
GU is also planning to purchase equipment pertaining to space applications.
"The grant will be utilised in space technology and satellite related research activities in the near future," said vice-chancellor (V-C) Parimal Trivedi.
According to Dr PN Gajjar, head,Physics department, this grant is just a beginning and the amount may touch Rs1 crore if additional grant will be sanctioned.
"We had made a presentation before UGC officials a few months back; they recognised our work in condense matter, which is of international standard and approved the grant. We will use the grant for conferences, seminars, training students and fellowship programmes." added Dr Gajjar.
This grant to the physics department is a part of the first phase of Development of Research Scheme, known as DRS-1. According to the V-C, if the university successfully utilises this fund in three years, UGC will approve another grant of Rs 3 crore under phase two of the DRS.
Under the merger scheme, UGC has approved Rs 6,43,50,000 for GU to be utilised for the overall development of the varsity.
According to the merger scheme, every year UGC treasury receives un-used grants from different universities and that fund is re-allocated to those universities which are efficient and in need of more support.
GU has already made a detailed plan to utilise this amount in the next four years. Apart from developing facilities for adventure sports, day care centre, coaching facility for NET aspirants, the GU will build a girls' hostel for Rs1 crore and a laboratory for Rs 35 lakhs.
GU has also announced the hiring of visiting faculties, conducting seminars, and publication of books as other utilities of the generous sum.
The university will also develop facilities for physically challenged students, for which it will spend Rs 27 lakhs
