If you thought only big business tycoons flew around in private aircraft, think again. In Gujarat, even smaller businessmen are aiming the skies.
In the last one week, three entrepreneurs have purchased choppers. One of them is realtor Praveen Kotak who has ongoing projects across Gujarat. Himanshu Varia, who runs a small engineering company in Ahmedabad, has purchased another. And so has Vikram, son of former MLA Bhavan Bharwad who has interests in the hospitality business.
All three have bought the same model — a single-engine, eight-seater Agusta Koala. Each copter, which has been made by an Anglo-Italian firm and purchased from a London-based dealer, costs around Rs 13 crore.
"We have business interests across all major cities in Gujarat and Mumbai. Travelling to places like Kandla, Surat, Somnath and others by road is tiresome," says Kotak.
Besides personal use, what is interesting is that the three also plan to together float an aviation company to cater to the growing air-transportation needs in the state. They plan to have three private helipads to park the flying machines. Kotak has constructed a helipad at his under-construction palatial bungalow behind Rajpath Club.
"One chopper has arrived and two more will come to Ahmedabad shortly. We may add some more helicopters to our fleet," says Kotak, who sees great potential in growing religious and business tourism segments. "There is nobody to cater to people wanting to travel to industrial hubs like Kutch, Jamnagar, Dahej and Hazira," he says.
While local players like Saurashtra Aviation and Aahna Aviation manage one copter each, US-based world's fourth largest helicopter service provider company SkyLink Aviation Inc plans to start intra-state helicopter services in Gujarat with a giant 23-seater helicopter.
